FT Energy Transition Summit

FT Energy Transition Summit

Our Chief Investment Officer Zlati Christov will be speaking at the FT’s Energy Transition Summit at 9:20 AM – 10:10 AM GMT on the 23rd October. He’ll be speaking on a panel: Disrupters vs incumbents – Is collaboration or competition the most effective catalyst for progress in the energy transition?

Abstract: The energy transition, vital for achieving net zero emissions, presents a complex landscape of challenges. In fact, many oil and gas executives now predict net zero will not be achieved until 2060 or later. In response, many suggest that there should be a bifurcation of the transition by separating the process of decarbonising existing fossil fuel systems and ramping up of clean energy alternatives to meet future demands. While many have previously argued that energy industry incumbents would be critical in the expansion of renewable energy networks given their longstanding capital and expertise, many now suggest that new disrupters solely focused on the new clean energy sector should and will drive the transition, while traditional energy companies will lag behind.

  • Would encouraging disruption and competition cause chaos or drive progress?
  • Who bears responsibility for the transition’s slow pace? Is it incumbents resisting, or is it simply hard?
  • Are there successful examples of collaboration?
  • What role should policy play in arbitrating the leaders and laggards of the transition?
