A new renewables company to transform the global energy system
Nathalie Oosterlinck, CEO:
My career has been dedicated to scaling up renewable energy. Over that time, the world has seen significant growth in capacity – with wind and solar now delivering clean power at scale across some of the largest economies on the globe.
Despite this progress, there remains a significant gap between where we are now and where we need to get to. Late last year, we saw 118 countries join a commitment to triple renewable power by 2030 at COP28 – a welcome ambition. That scale of ambition requires rapid and profound transformation of the energy sector, which must evolve at speed to meet the challenges head on.
It is against this backdrop that we launch JERA Nex with a bold mission: To accelerate the transformation of the global energy system by creating a new renewable energy company. One that combines the backing and resilience of JERA, one of the world’s largest electricity producers, with the agility and focus of a dedicated renewables business to achieve the scale we need to reach net zero by 2050.
JERA Nex is established on the belief that consolidating JERA’s renewables activity with a flexible, agile and experienced team of renewables specialists will create a centre of excellence that can develop a renewables portfolio at pace and accelerate the growth of clean energy globally.
We have a bold ambition of 20GW of renewable energy capacity by 2035, building a global portfolio of onshore wind, offshore wind, solar and storage assets, through a develop-own-operate model.
And we have chosen the UK as our base to grow because of the country’s demonstrated leadership in renewable energy over the last decade, particularly in offshore wind.
As we grow our business, we will draw on the market’s experience in financing renewables projects and on its talent pool, creating teams that bring together diversity of thought and experience. We know that the essence of success in renewable energy infrastructure development and operation lies in the people behind the projects. This means hiring top talent, excited by the prospect of a lower carbon future.
But we are not starting from scratch. Our acquisition of Parkwind, Belgium’s largest offshore wind platform, in combination with the assets developed and acquired by JERA, means we already have a total renewable installed capacity of 3GW and a development pipeline of 10GW globally. Parkwind’s successes complement JERA’s significant experience in APAC and the US, and combining these teams creates a wealth of insight and experience.
With that we also have significant experience in Asia, which looks set to be the next frontier for renewables in general and offshore wind in particular. Formosa 1 and 2 are among the pioneers of Asian wind energy while Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido is one of Japan’s first and our Katagami project is now under development.
Alongside new projects and new people, achieving our ambitions will demand new ways of thinking. Thinking – and collaboration – that can connect the dots between green technologies, utilizing JERA’s platform to deliver innovative energy systems and propel decarbonization.
It’s in our name – we want to be the nexus, the focal point, the driver, of transformation. We will invest in the energy of tomorrow, stimulating lasting change and decarbonization through our focus on innovation.
An exciting journey ahead, with much to achieve. Become the partner of choice to innovators, investors, developers and governments seeking to scale up renewables and push boundaries. Build diverse and skilled teams. Test new solutions to accelerate a more innovative and diversified energy mix. Scale green energy at pace, for a sustainable future – this is our ambition for JERA Nex.
